Before social media, nineteenth-century Americans followed public figures through newspapers, caricatures, lithographs, and political gossip. This presentation explores how Julia Gardiner Tyler—who became the first First Lady to marry a sitting president—found herself swept into America’s rapidly growing culture of publicity, scandal, and political celebrity.

Beginning with the infamous 1840 “Rose of Long Island” caricature published in New York City, the talk traces Julia’s unexpected journey from a young woman targeted by gossip and satire to a nationally recognized political figure after her secret marriage to President John Tyler in 1844.

As the national debate over the annexation of Texas intensified, Julia herself became a powerful public symbol within the political press. Through newspapers, caricatures, portraiture, and political commentary, this presentation reveals how Julia Gardiner Tyler helped usher in a new era of First Lady visibility and public fascination at a pivotal moment in American history.
